As60% of the City’s greenery is supported by the greenery ofprivately-owned land, cooperation between the City and residentsis essential to protect and retain greenery. According tothe City’s Park and Green Area Renewal Plan which makeseffective use of existing parks and green areas, the City is promotingthe improvement of parks and green areas that are bothfunctional and attractive. Preparations are being made to preparea basic plan for the establishment of Kichijoji-no-moriMiyamoto-koji Park in 1-chome Kichijoji-higashicho. Under theBig Tree and Symbol Tree 2,000 Plan, which aims to preserve2,000 big trees by the year 2000, the number of preservedtrees has already surpassed 2,100 trees. Accordingto the City’s Sengawa Environmental Development Plan (SengawaRemaking) established in 1998, however, Sengawa is being turnedinto a familiar river through natural revetments. This green riversidehas become partof an endearingand familiar naturalsite for theresidents.Shifting to renewable energyIn order to control global warming and leave ahealthy global environment into the future, it isimportant to conserve energy and concurrentlycreate energy. Solar power generation equipmenthas been installed at 21 municipal facilities (as ofFY2011), including the roofs of elementary andjunior high schools, and more are to be installed.
