DisasterManagementand SafetyA city fully prepared for contingencies and whereresidents help each other on their own initiative“Self-support”and“Co-support”our communityfrom disastersThe issue of disaster management has risen tothe forefront as a result of the Great East JapanEarthquake. The probability of an inland earthquakeoccurring in Tokyo in the next 30 yearsis said to be 70%, and it is an imperative thatthe City makes further preparations.When a disaster strikes, the disaster managementactivities of residents play a criticalrole. The Musashino Volunteer Fire Corpsformed by local residents?conducts firefightingand relief activities as well as advises communitymembers on disaster management inpreparation for disasters. The team is staffedwith 260 members in total, combining its headquartersand 10 branches.Increasingly, civic groups are formingvoluntary disaster management units andtaking initiatives on their own to increase thedisaster management capabilities of the community.Efforts are made on a daily basis tohold evacuation drills, stock and inspect disastergoods, and be aware of the places whereare at risk in the community.The Musashino Citizen Disaster PreventionAssociation assigns disaster managementpromoters to each of the 13 areas of the City.The promoters spread knowledge and raiseawareness about disaster management ineach area.City’s Disaster Management Headquarters Office in the wake ofthe Great East Japan EarthquakeA drill of the voluntary disaster response group carried out in allareas of the City38
