Distinctive educational activities that pave the way for the futureRunning FestivalSchool meal get-together of Kyounan Elementary SchoolMusashino City promotes distinctive schoolactivities by leveraging the many strengths ofthe community.All 12 elementary schools in the Cityhave a school biotope at which childrenobserve waterfront living creatures and learnabout plant cultivation. At the Running Festival,children experience the joy of movingtheir bodies. At the Municipal Junior HighSchool Sports Festival, junior high school studentscompete in more than 10 events,including track and ball games. At the schoollibraries, school library supporters play anactive role and support children’s motivationto read. In addition,“interactive school meals”or“school meal get-togethers”are organizedto promote exchanges over school meals byinviting community members to the schools.Wheat farming demonstrations are also performedwith the cooperation of local farmers.Brass band of Sekimae Minami Elementary SchoolA school library supporter reading to childrenWheat farming demonstration at Senkawa Elementary SchoolBiotope at the school grounds of Inokashira Elementary SchoolSecond School programfosters a zest for livingThe outdoor education program“SecondSchool,”through overnight stays in an environmentblessed with nature, is conducted tofoster children’s rich sentiments and developenriching relationships based on cooperativenessand a sense of solidarity. This program,which started in 1992, later became a nationalmodel. As a learning experience in rural areaswhich cannot be experienced in classrooms(“first school”), fifth graders stay 6 to 7 nights,while first-year junior high school studentsstay 4 nights. Since FY2005, the“Pre-secondSchool”program is also held for fourth gradersof municipal elementary schools to furtherincrease the effectiveness of learning at theSecond School.Rice planting demonstration36
