Food CultivationMusashino Had, and Still Has, Unique Local FoodsMusashino City has a delightful range of food cultures. Traditional foods long embedded in the localcuisine have been passed down through generations, including udo and jikona udon. Agriculture is wellestablished in the area, and fun food festivals are organized. A diverse food scene is rooted in the City.Agriculture fosteredwith community membersFarms are being relooked at as a place of interacting with natureand a place for educating about food, as well as space thatsupports the consolation of the people.One such place is the Takeuchi Fruit Garden, a shortdistance from Musashisakai Station. This land, which has beeninherited through generations since the Edo period, has transformedover time from a sericulture farm to a chicken farm andto a vegetable farm, and since the late 1960s, to the current fruitgarden. Grape and pear picking in August and September arepopular with visitors. Luscious fruits such as persimmon, Westernpear and kiwi are offered until mid-December. The Gardenhas become a community space that is essential to the locality.Japanese Spikenard?Tokyo Udo“Udo”is a traditional vegetable that announces the arrival of spring.Were you aware that udo’s production in Tokyo originated in Kichijoji?Its cultivation had already begun in the late Edo period. At theheight of its production, i.e. from the late 1960s to early 1970s, therewere 66 farm households producing udo. While the number is nowjust 8 households, udo’s flavor will be passed on to future generations.Udo production is done in a room with a low ceiling and is astrenuous work. This highly praised taste of Musashino City-grownudo is truly the product of the efforts of its producers.Hot pepper makesMusashisakai hot!Until the start of the Showa period, hot pepperwas the specialty of Musashino. Community membersare currently carrying out initiatives to revitalizethe community by drawing people’s attentionto the hot pepper, which had been cultivated inthe Musashisakai area. The Sakai HOT Hotto Projectprovides original hot pepper cuisine to visitorsand organizes seed planting and harvestingactivities for children at local farms.14
