Composting makesuse of and reduceswasteThe Clean Musashino PromotionCoalition, a civic group which carriesout waste reduction, recovery,and recycling activities, has beenpromoting the use of“CardboardCompost Bin”since 2009 thatconverts organic waste into compost.More than 400 householdscurrently utilize the bins. Activitiesare now underway with the nextphase in mind of recovering thecompost as resources.Eco activities that children can also participatein while having fun“Uchimizu (water sprinkling)”is a Japanesetraditional custom of lowering thetemperature by leveraging the vaporizationheat of water, and is one of the ecoactivities which is gaining attention onceagain as an effective means of counteringthe heat island phenomenon. Since 2004,Musashino City has been holding the“Musashino Uchimizu Mission”whereresidents spray water in unison. In additionto the City Hall, this activity is beingpromoted at a variety of places, includingnursery schools and childcare supportfacilities.A day when everyone contributestowards ridding waste from the CityMay 30 of every year is“Zero Waste Day.”In the morning of the first Sunday afterZero Waste Day, many Musashino Cityresidents get together to pick up emptycans, cigarette butts, and other waste inareas near the three stations of the City.Collecting waste in towns where peopleactually live in serve as an opportunity todirect their attention once again to the environmentalissues which exist around them.MyMusashino LifeUsing Household Organic Waste in Vegetable GardensIt’s been three and a half years since webegan promoting the use of the“CardboardCompost Bin.”Our goal is to further increaseits usage while working together with administration.We also hope to have farmers in theCity produce organic vegetables using thecompost and to serve these vegetables tochildren through their school meals, and inthis way, broaden our activities to incorporateboth the environmental and food educationaspects.Mr. Yoichi Ishikawa (left),Mr. Kazuo Shiga (right)Clean Musashino Promotion Coalition13
