Citizens Parade to Promote Environmental Cleanup (1985): The parade rallied for environmental cleanup of Kichijoji KintetsuuraSenkawa River (2001): The nearly dry Senkawa River was cleaned and revivedKichijoji Theater opens (2005): It became a talked-about base for performing arts creativity. In the mid-1970s and improvements in various areas moved ahead, including construction of Kyonan Community Center and community centers in the Nishikubo, Chuo and Kichijoji Higashi areas. The local residents manage the community centers. In addition, public welfare corporations were launched to prepare for an aging society.Based on the idea that health is the foundation of residents’ lives, in 1989 the Musashino Council for the Promotion of Sports was launched and construction on the Musashino Sports Complex and heated pool was finished. Welfare facilities were built, including the Musashino General Disability Center and facilities such as 0123 Kichijoji, which was the rst facility of its kind in Japan to cater to children 0–3 years old and their parents. International exchange through culture also took place frequently, including holding the 1st International Organ Competition and dispatching a nature expedition to Russia.Ten Million House began to support residents such as senior citizens who need to be watched over and a connection to society by utilizing community human resources and buildings. Health care facilities providing nursing care to elderly also opened. Lines for the community bus, Mu Bus were also created, and areas in the city with inconvenient access were improved. 54
