1958-19671968-1977Musashino rapidly urbanized against a backdrop of high economic growth. In the late 1950s to early 1960s, municipal housing, construction on housing complexes in Midoricho and Sakurazutsumi and residential development of farmland progressed and the population passed 100,000. The number of people who moved in from central Tokyo seeking housing grew, and the housing complexes in Midoricho and Sakurazutsumi were also built in this period. In 1962, the current neighborhood names were established. The number of double-income households also increased, more nursery schools were opened and after-school child care began. From the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, development progressed such as steel reinforcement of elementary and jr. high school buildings, construction on gymnasiums and pools and additional building of nursery schools. Kichijoji became even livelier with a rush of large store openings. New urban planning advanced as the city began re-development work in the Kichijoji Station vicinity and drew up plans for a square at the south exit of Musashisakai Station.
